Lecture: Building community for the largest Linux "distro": Android
F-Droid, Fairphone, LineageOS, MicroG, Mozilla, and so much more
The largest computing platform in the world is Android, and it is largely free software. Because of how its developed, the communities, companies and organizations around Android are organized quite differently than GNU/Linux distros. After many years of effort, a bunch of different efforts are starting to come together to form a complete free software mobile platform. This is includes F-Droid for the app store; Fairphone, LineageOS, Copperhead, etc. for the base operating system, and a variety of developers to provide all sorts of useful apps. This talk will give an overview of how things are functioning now, and where there are needs for more people to get involved. It will also over a number of integration efforts to get all this different projects to start working together as a whole platform that can really provide the entire mobile experience using on free software.
